Comprised of the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, we are the largest public arts institution in the City of San Francisco and one of the largest art museums in the United States.
Museum of the City of San Francisco has a major exhibit in San Francisco's City Hall. The exhibit at the City Hall South Light Court, Grove and Van Ness, is open for public viewing, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., Monday-Friday. City Hall is also open noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays.
In 1980 the Airport Commission entered into a collaboration with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco to create a program at the International Airport. After a successful first year, the San Francisco Airport Museum was created to curate exhibitions that would capture the unique culture of the Bay Area and humanize the Airport environment.
Museum of Craft and Folk Art
The Museum of Craft & Folk Art (formerly the San Francisco Craft & Folk Art Museum) moved to the Fort Mason Center in early 1987, just four years after its opening exhibition at the original site on Balboa Street. Soon the Museum was put on the map with an exhibition of quilts by East Bay residents entitled Improvisations in African American Quiltmaking, a dazzling display focusing on the connection between the visual arts and the creative improvisation that characterized early jazz and found its source in Africa.
The new Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is the result of the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the city's former Main Library, a 1917 beaux arts–style building.
