Visitors looking for a fresh San Francisco vacation rental, or an exciting experience need to look into one of the many San Francisco vacations available. San Francisco's diversity is perhaps most evident in its neighborhoods. The city's Restaurants, shops, theaters, art galleries, museums and, above all, its people hold the key to unique visitor experiences.
From Fisherman's Wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge, Today, the city remains a miraculously successful mix of natural brilliance and manmade ingenuity, drawing on the capabilities and cultural differences of peoples from around the world.
The city saw rapid growth in dotcom industries – located South of Market, and in nearby Silicon Valley – and is now recoiling from downturns in that same area. San Francisco is the financial capital of the West Coast and once a prime shipping gateway to the Pacific, although most cargo ships now head for Oakland.
Situated on a 120-sq-kilometre (46.6-sq-mile) peninsula – bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, the north by the Golden Gate Strait and north–east by the Bay. In 1847, when the West Coast region became US territory, it was renamed San Francisco, after the old Franciscan mission nearby. The city quickly mushroomed – the Gold Rush of 1849 inspiring a migration so rapid that seekers almost fell into the Pacific. They came from the west but also from the east – thousands of Chinese people escaped famine for a hard life on the railroads and in the mines, while Japanese immigrants became US farmers. Later came Mexicans and Filipinos. The city has 43 hills – including Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill and Twin Peaks.
